While Tabor Bread bakery on Hawthorne is definitely best known for milling their own flour for delicious baked-on-site bread and pastries, I wanted to tip you off that it is also a worthy destination for tea. Especially if you're looking for a bite to go with it.
Tabor Bread serves around a dozen handpicked tea options, by the cup or the pot, from Portland-based Jasmine Pearl Tea Company. Several of these are organic and a few are made up daily into iced tea.
A nice surprise is that they also offer well made tea lattes. These include a matcha version, a ginger and cardamom-spiced Assam with rose petals known as Bombay Breakfast, and others. The Bombay Breakfast is a lovely aromatic blend, but the flavor can be a bit gentle as a latte. If you like more assertive flavor, consider requesting it to be made stronger.
As for food options, Tabor Bread has you covered from sweet to savory and from small treat to full meal. Your options are especially plentiful during their weekend brunch.
Some of my favorites include: the frittata plate with changing seasonal ingredients, a stack of toast with butter and house-made jam, smoked salmon and fennel sandwich, and whatever looks yummiest from the pastry case (note: this is never an easy decision). Lemon ricotta tea cake, blueberry Earl Grey muffins, rosemary oregano cornbread, cinnamon bran muffins, donut muffins, chocolate espresso stout cake, and lots more goodies graced the case last time I was in.
Oh and one more thing, you won't want to leave without one of their flavorful, rustic-yet-refined breads tucked under your arm. Many breads are made everyday (I heart the 100% spelt), but look for the special of the day, too-- like semolina with sesame, dates, and cardamom, currant walnut, rosemary olive, and cinnamon swirl breakfast bread.
